Cabinet door slams: check the soft-close damper before replacing hinges

A door that used to close quietly but now hits the cabinet does not automatically need a complete set of new hinges. First identify the damping system and check whether the door itself moves without interference.

Find the damping mechanism

Soft closing may be built into a hinge or provided by a separate fitting on the cabinet. Photograph every hinge, its markings and any extra components near the door edge. Some models allow damping to be disabled; check a switch against the product instructions. Colour and general appearance are not enough to identify compatible hardware.

Separate a faulty damper from an alignment problem

Check whether the door catches an adjacent panel and whether the gaps are even. If it contacts the cabinet before the damper engages, alignment and fixing condition need assessment first. A hinge pulling out of damaged board requires a different repair from a sound hinge with an incorrect setting. Slamming harder is not a way to correct either problem.

Match more than the fixing holes

Compatibility depends on the particular hinge, door overlay, mounting plate and manufacturer guidance. A separate damper also needs the correct travel and mounting position. Gather the markings and cabinet instructions before buying a part. Not every soft-close fitting suits a heavy mirrored door; the system requirements determine the type and number of fittings.

Arrange an assessment in Herzliya

Send Dima a short closing video, close-ups of the hinges and a full cabinet photo. Say whether one door or several are affected and whether the problem began after moving. This helps distinguish cabinet adjustment from parts replacement. If the required hardware is unavailable, agree supply timing and any return visit separately.

What to send the handyman

  • A short closing video without pushing the door hard.
  • Close-ups of all hinges and identifying marks.
  • Full cabinet photo showing the gaps.
  • Instructions, approximate hardware age and city.

Common questions

Can any add-on damper be fitted?

No. Its travel, mounting position and compatibility need checking. An unsuitable fitting can stop the door closing fully.

It stopped working just after assembly. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Check the intended damping mechanism, settings, door gaps and assembly first.

Should I dismantle the damper?

Do not plan dismantling unless the manufacturer provides a service procedure. A compatible replacement is usually identified from the old part and its markings.
