Curtain rod above a balcony door: keep the door opening freely
A rod over a balcony door must do more than look level. The door, handle and curtain all need to move comfortably in daily use.
Open the door all the way
Check both normal and tilt positions if the door has them. Note the highest point of travel, the projecting handle and where the curtain gathers when open. Measuring only with the door shut can miss the exact points where the parts collide.
Choose the rod line and length
Allow enough space for fabric to move aside without blocking the passage. Thick curtains take more room when stacked and may weigh more. Bracket placement depends on the wall and manufacturer instructions; a long rod may need an additional support.
Account for nearby fixtures
Air-conditioning, a ceiling recess, a blind or a cabinet can restrict the available mounting area. If the door is used often, an easy passage may matter more than perfect symmetry. Say whether removing an old rod and hanging the fabric are part of the job.

- Photos with the door shut and fully open, including the ceiling and side walls.
- Opening width, rod length and clearance between the door top and ceiling.
- Rod model, curtain type or weight, and any existing fittings.

Can the rod sit immediately below the ceiling?
Not in every room. The fixing system and door movement need clearance, and the ceiling type also matters.
Does a long rod need a centre support?
