Replacing a shower hose: check threads, washers and leaks

A replacement hose must fit both the mixer and shower head, and its connections should stay dry after installation. Compare the ends and supplied parts before buying or removing it.

Check connection compatibility and washer condition before replacing the hose.

Measure and inspect both connections

Measure the old hose and photograph both ends, including the mixer and shower-head connections. Similar-looking products may differ in length, nut shape or internal washer. Check whether washers are included and whether the connectors fit your mixer.

Prepare for careful removal

Turn off the mixer controls and protect the bath surface from dropped tools. Look for corrosion or mineral build-up on the nuts. A seized connection can damage the mixer or supply fittings if forced; do not pull on the hose or use it as a lever.

Check washers and the wall holder

During assembly, the washer should sit flat and clean, without twisting. Avoid overtightening a plastic nut or forcing mismatched threads together. If the shower head rests in a wall holder, inspect that too: replacing a hose will not fix a broken holder or a cracked head.

Test after reconnecting

Turn the water on gradually and inspect both joints first at low flow and then at normal use. Wipe them with a dry tissue to reveal small drips. If leakage continues, turn off the water and check the washer seating. If the mixer body or wall connection leaks, stop and arrange a separate assessment.

Common questions

Should I wrap tape around the thread?

Many shower-hose joints seal with a flat washer rather than thread tape. Check the fitting design and product instructions; extra tape can prevent a nut from seating evenly.

Can I reuse the old washer?

If it is flattened, hardened, cracked or misshapen, do not rely on it. Use a washer of the correct size and type.

What if the nut will not turn?

Avoid sudden force or twisting the mixer. Corrosion or scale may need careful assessment to avoid damaging the supply fitting or mixer body.
